Do I Need a Visa?
Portugal is a member of the Schengen Area, which allows visa-free travel for short stays (up to 90 days in a 180-day period) for citizens of many countries, including:
- United States
- United Kingdom
- Canada
- Australia
- Japan
- EU/EEA countries
- Many others
If you are a national of one of these countries, you may enter Portugal without a visa for conference attendance, tourism, or business.

Basic Entry Requirements
Whether you need a visa or not, border authorities may ask for the following at the point of entry:
- A valid passport (recommended to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned stay)
- Proof of accommodation in Portugal (hotel booking or Airbnb confirmation)
- Return or onward travel ticket
- Travel health insurance with a minimum coverage of €30,000 (especially important if a visa is required)
- Proof of sufficient funds for the duration of your stay (approximately €100 per day)
When and How to Apply (If a Visa is Required)
If your country does require a visa to enter Portugal:
- Apply for a short-stay Schengen visa (Type C) for “conference participation” or “business.”
- Submit your application through the Portuguese consulate or VFS Global office in your country.
- Start your application at least 6–8 weeks in advance, as processing times can vary.
You will likely need:
- Completed visa application form
- Passport-sized photos
- Proof of travel and accommodation
- Conference invitation letter (available upon request)
- Proof of income or sponsorship
- Travel insurance

ETIAS Travel Authorization (Coming Soon)
Please note: Starting in late 2026, travelers from visa-exempt countries will need to apply for an ETIAS authorization before entering Portugal or other Schengen countries. This does not apply yet.
